The Accidental Rebel | The Accidental Rebel

Directed by Randa Chahoud, Germany, Great Britain, 2019 Genre: Drama | 108  - Italian Premiere at Siff 2020 - September 1-6

Karim and Yasir, Syrian brothers, take a big risk by singing at a concert songs that are banned by the governament. Five years later, Karim lives happily in Hamburg with his fiancée when he is informed of his brother's disappearance in Turkey. With the permission of his beloved, Karim borrows money and leaves to find out what happened to him. However, the trip he promised to make in just three days does not go as planned.

The complex events of recent Syrian history are reflected in the experiences of a refugee in the first ambitious and solid feature film made by the writer / director Randa Chahoud.

On the one hand the family, on the other the homeland. To hold them together: freedom. The war for freedom, a struggle for which there is never too little. But the war remains inside you and the war never really comes back.. Then, while on the bloodthirsty border between Syria and Turkey, a family shatters, elsewhere, further afield, in Germany, another family comes to life. Because here freedom is a birth right and does not need to be conquered.

Randa Chahoud, in her first feature - in Italian preview at SIFF2020 - while telling the story of two brothers divided by the war and two worlds that, instead, the war brings together, never misses an opportunity to tell and pay homage to its two stories. The stories of his origins - Syrian father, German mother - of two countries, two realities, two ways of understanding freedom, love, love for freedom and the freedom to love.

Here it is against the background of ordinary days, the great story that dictates the turning points and the choices of the little stories. Everyone's stories, that of a family forced to rethink in the light of events and bombs. Maybe at other latitudes, in other languages, with other identities. In search of something new - as Blue Comme Moi sings in the last scene - in search of freedom, love and above all, normalcy.
