A film by Cristiano Bortone & Daniela Porto

Country: Italia Year: 2024 RT 110 min. Language: Italian | Special Screening

Directed by Cristiano Bortone and Daniela Porto, a courageous and touching film that tells a story of friendship and female emancipation in rural post-war Italy. Set among the evocative landscapes of Calabria in the 1940s, the film tells the story of Marta, a young single mother forced to deal with the impositions of a patriarchal and bigoted society.

Marta, played by Ludovica Martino, she finds herself promised in marriage to a man she doesn’t love, suffering the weight of the judgment and expectations of a community that marginalizes her due to her condition. The meeting with Lorenzo (Marco Leonardi), the town’s homosexual known as “the wedding planner”, represents a fundamental turning point in his life. An intense friendship is born between the two which pushes Marta to question social conventions and fight for her freedom. The film stands out for its realistic and no-frills narration, which does not sugarcoat the difficulties and challenges faced by the protagonists. Bortone and Porto’s direction is sensitive and attentive, capable of capturing the emotional nuances of the characters and providing a vivid portrait of the society of the time. The performances of Ludovica Martino and Marco Leonardi are excellent. Martino offers a convincing and touching performance in the role of Marta, effectively conveying the fragility and determination of his protagonist. Leonardi, on the other hand, is a mesured and intense in outlining the figure of Lorenzo, a complex and multifaceted character.
